When Mary Magdalene Steiner and James Ewen were married, she was 16 years old and he was 32. After James Ewen died in Feb of 1899, she was left with Grace Anna (17 yrs. old), Matthew Frank (15 yrs. old), and Lawrence (8 yrs. old). Her Catholic Priest asked for more money to be contributed to the church. She said that she couldn't afford to give more money, but since she owned two cows, he told her to sell one of them and give the money to the church. Needing both cows for her children's milk, as well as income from milk, she left the Church. Mary Magdalene bought run-down houses, repaired and painted them, then sold for a profit to support her children. As a widowed mother she supported herself and her children this way. We don't have a record of the date of her marriage to John Govan
